Sankofa is an African Adinkra symbol which means “Go back and get it.” This idea is illustrated by a bird with its neck turned backward, as it returns to the source. It’s a symbol which has been used by Black people in West Africa as a reminder to return to the lessons of the past in order to navigate the future.
